Several people were killed 16 August 2012 when South African police opened fire on thousands of mine workers who were participating in an illegal strike at a northern platinum mine, eNews broadcaster reported. There were reports that some strikers had opened fire on the police, prompting a heavy return volley of shots from the armed officers. Ten people have been confirmed dead since violence broke out at the Lonmin mine in the North-West province on Friday, including security guards and two police officers.
