Berzins believes Orthodox Christmas should become state holiday

RIGA, Feb 22 (LETA) - President Andris Berzins believes that Orthodox Christmas should be designated a state holiday.

As reported, Harmony Center has come up with amendments to the Law on Holidays and Remembrance Days, which stipulate that Orthodox Christmas on January 7 will be designated a state holiday....

Pabriks expresses condolences regarding death of three Georgian soldiers in Afghanistan

RIGA, Feb 22 (LETA) - Defense Minister Artis Pabriks (Unity) and National Armed Forces (NAF) Commander, General-Major Raimonds Graube, have expressed their condolences to Georgian Defense Minister Bachana Akhalaja in regard to the death of three Georgian soldiers in Afghanistan, LETA was informed by the Defense Ministry's press department.

He urged every Latvian resident to put Georgia in their thoughts today....

Latvian and French foreign ministers sign Strategic Partnership Action Plan

RIGA, Feb 22 (LETA) - During a working visit to France yesterday, Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics and French Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Alain Juppe signed the Strategic Partnership Action Plan between Latvia and France, LETA was informed by the Latvian Foreign Ministry.

The Action Plan supplements the Political Declaration on Strategic Partnership signed by the then-Latvian and French prime ministers back in May of 2008....

FCMC accepts "KPMG Baltics" proposal to launch bankruptcy proceedings against "Krajbanka"

RIGA, Feb 21 (NOZARE.LV) - The Financial and Capital Markets Commission (FCMC) has decided to accept "KPMG Baltics" proposal to launch bankruptcy proceedings against "Latvijas Krajbanka", FCMC Chairman Kristaps Zakulis announced in a press conference today.

As reported, none of the proposals for the recovery of "Latvijas Krajbanka", received by the bank's insolvency administrator - auditing company "KPMG Baltics", was feasible in practice, as the company concluded....

''airBaltic'' could be issued another LVL 25 million loan from State Treasury

RIGA, Feb 21 (LETA) - The government may have to decide on issuing another LVL 25 million loan to national airline ''airBaltic'' from the State Treasury, Transport Ministry State Secretary Anrijs Matiss told members of the press today.

At the beginning of March, the government will also review the airline's business plan, during which also discussed will be updating the airline's fleet....

Competition Council fines Riga Airport LVL 50,000 for applying reduced fees for "Ryanair"

RIGA, Feb 21 (NOZARE.LV) - The Competition Council has fined Riga Airport LVL 50,000 for abusing its dominant position and applying considerably lower fees for Irish low-cost carrier "Ryanair" than the national airline "airBaltic".

In comparing the airport's fees applied to both airlines, the Competition Council established that "airBaltic" paid 82 percent more than "Ryanair" for similar services. Moreover, the national airline had to pay the airport's administrative costs, increasing the difference even more....
