20 Covid-19 infections established at nursing home in Rezekne

RIGA, Oct 28 (LETA) - 20 Covid-19 infections have been established at a nuring home in Rezekne (eastern Latvia), the head of the municipality's social care department Gunars Arbidans told LETA, adding that ''the situation is being controlled''.

Arbidans explained that one of the nursing home's clients was taken to hospital on October 21, and died on October 23. It later turned out this person was infected with Covid-19.

After this, all the clients of the nursing home and staff were tested for Covid-19. The test results then showed that 12 clients of the nursing home, and eight staff members were infected with the virus.

"An action plan and instructions were developed to limit the spread of the virus at the nursing home. Employees with positive test results were sent to quarantine, and their contacts are also quarantined. All sick clients are confined and housed on a separate floor, where their health is closely being monitored," said Arbidans.

Commenting the situation, Rezekne Mayor Aleksandrs Bartasevics (Harmony) called on the public to take the restrictions imposed by the state and municipality seriously.

"I urge residents to monitor their health and contact a family doctor in case of any suspicion. Only through our own responsibility will we be able to limit the spread of the virus. At the moment, it is very important for us to track the spread of the virus and limit it," said the mayor.
